Adapting to battlefield experience in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Army is revamping its basic-training regimen for the first time in three decades by scrapping five-mile runs and bayonet drills in favor of zigzag sprints and honing core muscles. Trainers hope the switch will better prepare soldiers physically for the pace of combat, with its sudden dashes and rolling gun battles. They also want to toughen recruits who are often more familiar with Facebook than fistfights.

The first Savannah Fire & Emergency Services recruit class in more than a year was honored Friday afternoon during a ceremony at the Armstrong Center. The 17 men and one woman were brought before Savannah Fire command staff in view of a crowd teeming with family members, friends and colleagues. The group first was graced by guest speaker Chief David Wall, director of the Georgia Fire Academy, who reminded the new firefighters that whether they're on shift or off duty, they are always firefighters and

The drives are planned at Big R, located at 1147 W. Broadway Ave. in Moses Lake and Del's Farm Supply, located at 1510 Basin St. in Ephrata. Posse members are giving free horse rides and providing information about their group to recruit more volunteers. The posse assists law enforcement in search efforts during investigations, provides mounted and foot patrol security, volunteer during events including Chief for a Day, Grant County Museum Pioneer Days and represents the sheriff's office during parade

THE work and dedication at The Salvation Army hostel in St Helens has been recognised at an awards ceremony, celebrating those who work with the homeless. Salisbury House, on Phoenix Brow, was a joint winner of the Activity and Training award at The Salvation Army's Social Service Awards in Derbyshire. Placing a major emphasis on sport, residents at Salisbury House make regular trips to football and rugby league games.

Civilians of Unit Run Canteens (URCs) functioning under the three wings of India's defence forces - Army, Navy and Air Force have sought parity in pay and benefits with their parent organisation, the Canteen Stores Department (CSD). Under the banner of All India Defence Civilian Canteen Employees Union (AIDCCEU), they staged a protest demonstration to voice their demands here on Thursday. They said that respective commanders have been exploiting the Unit Run Canteens since these operate as non-public

We give them a profit of 500 crore rupees per annum, but not even a single money is put in for our welfare. 100 percent of money is put in for the welfare of Army, Navy and Air Force, Is it justice? We work as much equal to the Canteen Stores Department, the CSD. The CSD is a wholesale depot from where we take goods and supply to the end customers through our canteens, but the members of CSD are given government salary and we are not. Even though he never graduated, Kemmons Wilson, who founded the Holiday Inn corporation in Memphis in the 1950s, was asked one year to give the commencement speech at his old high school. "I really don't know why I'm here," Wilson said. "I never got a diploma, and I've only worked half days my entire life. I guess that's my advice to you. Work half days every day.
